In financial terms, “top line” refers to the gross sales or revenues of a company, or to a course of action that impacts revenues. A company that increases its revenues is said to be “growing its top line” or “generating top-line growth.”
This contrasts with “bottom line,” the net income, net earnings per share, or any actions that impact a company’s overall profit. A company that is growing its net earnings or reducing its costs is said to be “improving its bottom line.”
Applying this metaphor to professional development, “top line” refers to growth in a leader’s skills and capabilities. It is the “gross revenue” of professional contribution.
This contrasts with “bottom line,” which is net contribution. Bottom line is the result of utilizing the professional’s skills and capabilities in the most effective manner.
